Gwinnett Tax Commissioner offices to reopen with new safety measures under COVID-19

Gwinnett County

Expect longer waits

Gwinnett County Tax Commissioner Richard Steele announced today the reopening of all tax, tag and title branches on Monday, May 18, having established a number of safety and social distancing measures to help slow the spread of COVID-19.

“Our first priority is the safety of customers and associates,” Steele said. “The safest option is for people to skip the trip entirely and just renew online or at a kiosk; next is to skip the line by using our drop box service. For those whose business requires an in-person visit, such as new residents, we’ve made the process as safe as possible.”

Branches will hold normal business hours. Saturday service, however, is suspended indefinitely.

With more than 200,000 residents who need to complete tax, tag and title services in one month instead of three, customers should expect longer waits. Officials say visiting on odd or even days to match birthdays is suggested – not mandated – to split the crowd. For example, a March 25 birthday would visit on odd days such as May 27, 29 and so on; and an April 24 birthday on May 26, 28 or so on.

The new procedures include:

A three-step service process: Check in, Wait in car, Go to staging.

Social distancing of at least six feet to include limiting staff to every other window and customers to a maximum of 10 inside at any given time.

All contactless payment methods are now accepted, including Apple, Android and Samsung Pay, so customers can pay without touching the terminals.

Other safety measures include sanitizing common areas on a regular schedule.

The Georgia Department of Revenue has extended to June 15 all registrations, temporary operating permits, and private party vehicle purchases that took place or would have expired between March 16 and June 14 to give residents about a month to complete their services in time to avoid late fees.
